Reflections

Kevin D. Miller
I started writing poetry to better understand and express my emotions. For years, I struggled to slow down — always plugged in, always distracted. Whether it was social media, audible, Kindle books, or games, there was always something keeping me from being fully present. Even the quiet moments were swallowed up by the instinct to reach for my phone.
Journaling didn’t work for me. But one morning, on a walk without distractions, I decided to just be — no noise, no screen, just me and the world. And in that stillness, something opened. I felt more clearly. I noticed more deeply. That’s when I tried writing my first haiku.
The structure of haiku spoke to me. It gave me just enough form to feel grounded while still allowing space for emotion and reflection. My daily walks soon became a ritual: time to breathe, observe, and translate my inner world through the natural one around me.
This site is a record of that journey — of trying to be present, to feel fully, and to put those moments into words.
